When first introduced, a confirmation letter from the landlord was required to receive the monthly rent tax deduction, and it was also necessary to receive a fixed date, so there were many cases in which the monthly rent tax deduction was not received.
Perhaps because of this, there were many cases in which people gave up on the monthly rent tax deduction altogether because of the perception that it was difficult to receive the monthly rent tax deduction, or because of the landlord’s notice.
But now, if you can prove that you paid the monthly rent, you can easily get a monthly rent tax deduction. Even the monthly rent paid in the past. If you are wondering how to do it, please see below.
If you have rent that has not been deducted before, let’s get the monthly rent refunded through ‘Claim for Correction’.
▣ Procedure for refunding monthly rent tax deduction
The monthly rent tax credit refund procedure is called a monthly rent tax credit correction request in accurate tax terms. As shown in the figure below, the request for correction proceeds in the order of filling out the request for correction -> submitting the request for correction, etc. -> submitting supporting documents, etc.

▼ As usual, access the National Tax Service Hometax (https://www.hometax.go.kr/), log in, and hover your mouse over the Report/Payment tab to see a list below. From there, click on Global Income Tax on the tax return page.

Anyway, since the monthly rent tax credit is only a worker or a conscientious business owner, if you are a conscientious business owner, you can click the Request for Correction tab on the general report, and if you are an employee, you can click the Request for Correction tab on the wage and salary income earner report.
▼ I will proceed assuming that there is only earned income.
▼ When you click Create Correction Request, the first screen as shown below appears. From there, select the year for which you want to apply the monthly rent tax deduction and click the Search button. In other words, select the year in which the monthly rent was paid. And then go to
▼ Then, the withholding tax receipt submitted by the company will appear. It is not a very important process as it is a screen to check whether the previously reported information has been entered correctly. You can compare it with the withholding receipt received from the company to see if it was entered correctly in Hometax.
▼ Let’s check only the monthly rent tax deduction. If you click the tab marked in red and look at the contents below, there is nothing in the monthly rent tax credit statement. This is because I had not applied for the monthly rent tax deduction before.
▼ So, when you report a monthly rent tax credit that you have not applied for before, the process of receiving a refund of the monthly rent tax credit by reflecting it is the application for correction.
▼ After confirming the contents, click Next to move to the next screen. Earlier, on the first screen, I selected 2018 as the year I want to apply the monthly rent tax deduction, but it comes out as 2018 as the applicable year. Enter other basic information and move on.
▼ Then, the 2018 earned income report submitted by the company will appear. Assuming the rest of the entries are entered correctly, scroll all the way down.
▼ Scroll down until you see the tax credit section. Then you will see the monthly rent tax deduction column on the right side. Then click on the calculator next to it.
▼ Then a pop-up like the picture below will appear. Then, enter the total monthly rent you paid in 2018. I assumed that I paid 500,000 won each for 12 months. 500,000 won X 12 months = 6 million won, so insert 6 million won and click Apply.
▼ When I came back, it applied well, right? 720,000 won for 6 million won is quite a lot.
▼ If you come down to the bottom, do you see that the monthly rent tax credit refund of 72 won has been added in the tax payment (refund) section? Then you’re doing it right.
▼ Finally, enter the account to which the monthly rent tax deduction is to be refunded, and click Complete Report.
▼ Now, you can finally fill out the correction request form. You just need to check if the other details are correct. In the report, select and enter the reason for requesting correction as tax credit-other, and enter omission of monthly rent tax credit.
▼ Scroll down to check the monthly rent tax credit refund tax amount and account number once again, and click the report completion button.
▼ Finally, the report submission screen appears, and if there is no problem, click Submit Report.
▼ When the report receipt pop-up appears, check the checkbox and click Step2 Report Details.
▼ Filling out the report is not the end. Now we have to go to submit the annexes. Attached documents are as follows. Please prepare in advance.
① Copy of resident registration card (can be issued by Government 24)
② Lease contract (monthly rent contract)
③ Evidence to confirm the details of the deposit, such as a remittance confirmation
▼ When the Report Submission List screen appears, click Search first and click the link marked ‘N’ for whether to submit supplementary documents.
▼ Then, the Submit Submission of Attached Documents will appear. Enter your resident registration number here and click Search to see the report details. Click Attach Attachment to upload attachments.
▼ Select the file prepared in advance and click Submit Attachments.
Finally, the long and lengthy application process has come to an end. If you have not received your monthly rent tax deduction refund, please apply before the deadline for claiming correction ends.
